Why Your New Home Should Be a Smart Home

Smart home technologies can be as simple as a lock, light or appliance you can activate with a voice, token or smartphone. But this can be as in-depth as whole household management systems that can regulate the comfort, security, and more for those who live there.

If you’re considering buying or building a new home, here are five solid reasons your new home should be a smart home.

1. Convenience

We increasingly integrated smart home technology into things we already use, so it’s not much of a stretch to incorporate smarter technologies into your home. Best of all, you don’t have to “learn” how to use it. This is technology that is built with the user in mind, making it intuitive and functional.

Monitor and manage your smart home technology remotely, or sometimes through automatic machine learning. There’s no more worrying about whether you left the coffee pot on, turned off the lights or locked the door.

2. Eco-friendly

Many smart homes can make their own energy and share the excess with their local power company to make renewable energy more available to others. But even if your home isn’t carbon neutral, smart technologies can help you understand your energy usage so you can discover fresh ways to cut back without sacrificing comfort. They can also help you use energy in the most efficient ways, automatically reducing your footprint with less effort.

3. Cost-savings

Smart home technologies allow you to set and monitor your passive appliances and systems, such as your refrigerator, oven and air systems. By setting sensors and adjusting the settings to optimal energy-efficiency, typically found in an appliance’s manual, you’ll be able to tell when the temperature is a little too low when no one’s home or the fridge a little too cold because it was left ajar.

No matter what your electronic setup is, by monitoring with smart technology you can control the output of the appliances and get notifications when problems arise so you can deal with them sooner rather than later. After all, any extra expenditure of energy could end up racking up the bills and piling up after a while.

4. Enhanced Security & Protection

Today security systems are much more than motion sensors and window alarms. They can be smart and fully integrated into your home to detect dangers and alert you quickly. Detect water, carbon monoxide and smoke faster. Connect smart security to other smart home features to manage lights, temperature and monitor and protect your home even when you’re not there.

5. Better Resale Value

People want smart homes, and they’re willing to pay more for homes that have smart home technologies. Smart technologies make homes more appealing because of savings, protections, eco-friendliness, etc., but they also save their future homeowners in insurance and can easily be upgraded as technologies advance, giving them the upper hand if they decide to sell.

Across generations, people recognize the value, convenience and savings these technologies provide. So choosing to make your next home a smart home is certainly a smart move.

I have called Southwest Michigan home for 40 years. My mother's family ran a local locksmith service, and my father served as the Chief Investigator for the County's Prosecutor's office for many years. I love all that this area offers, and I enjoy serving the buyers and sellers who are moving in or out of Southwest Michigan.

My wife and I have two children, and we would not want to raise them anywhere else. Between the award-winning schools and the plethora of youth activities offered in Southwest Michigan, it's a great place to call home. We enjoy spending time with friends at the beach, boating, golfing, hunting, skiing "Up North," and fishing.

We give back generously to the community that has been so good to us. Currently, I serve on the Lakeshore Public Schools Foundation Board (LEF), as Past President of the St. Joe Kickers Sports Club, and as a Rotarian in the Stevensville-Lakeshore Rotary Club. We donate throughout the year to various local organizations, schools, and youth sports groups.

I want to put my experience and knowledge to work for you. Having sold more than 500 properties while earning the trust and respect of my fellow REALTORS, who voted me the "REALTOR of the Year," I am confident I can earn your trust as well.
